Are hybrid seeds superior than OPV?

In this section let us learn Why we need to plant Hybrid (F1s) in place of OPVs(open pollinated varieties (locals)Seeds are produced to suit on agro ecological zones. There are those that will do well in Highland areas ,Transition and Medium dry and Lowlands . Some varieties are adapted widely. Both hybrids and OPVs are good seeds for the farmers. But due to change in technology and innovations seed technology has developed and now research has revealed Hybrid seeds are much superior compared to OPVs.

The following are some of the reasons you need to plant Hybrid seeds from Simlaw.

  1.  Hybrid seeds have a high production compared to OPVs
  2.  For the acclimation hybrids does well immediately after transplanting/planting
  3.  The produce after harvesting they transport well in long distances eg Gloria/star F1 can be transported from Meru to Marsabit or to Mombasa and even far without losing the qualities.
  4.  Long shelf life is also another attribute
  5.  Tolerance to different change of weather.
  6.  Hybrids cost of production is low especially when dealing with pests and diseases since most of them tolerate diseases. eg Queen F1 tolerate black rot among others so it is easy to manage unlike OPVs Please note that prices of both vary, For the OPVs prices are low and suited for the customers that are doing crops on small plots eg kitchen garden among others. The seeds are certified and also equal to high production but not as much as compared to hybrids.
